Local History

How King Got Its Name

A quick backstory on how a small community called Five Forks turned into the town buyers are searching today.

Historic King NC — originally known as Five Forks

From Five Forks to King

Originally part of the village of Five Forks — named for the five roads that converged there — King had a post office as early as 1871. The stage coach road from Bethania to Trinity Church passed right through it.

King would have been just a whistle stop on the railroad had it not been for the foresight of the Spainhour, Grabs, Slate, and a few other families who built a depot and sold it to the railroad for one dollar. The railroad changed the name to King, and the post office followed in 1894.

The first school opened in 1896. When the County Board of Education approved a high school, local men jacked up the two-room elementary building and built two new rooms beneath it — that was King's first high school.

Today, King is a bustling small city with shopping centers, churches, manufacturing, a library, a YMCA, business parks, restaurants, police and fire, two medical centers, and just about everything that makes for a great place to live.

Practical Buyer Context

What to Think Through Before You Buy in King

Location matters more than buyers expect

King is small, but the right neighborhood can still make your routine feel a lot easier — while the wrong one can add time to every drive you make.

  • How close do you want to be to Hwy 52 for a Winston-Salem commute?
  • Established neighborhood, newer build, or rural acreage just outside town?
  • Brick ranch, one-level living, or a more traditional two-story layout?
  • School assignment a deciding factor, or flexible on that?

King works well for buyers who want value

A lot of buyers start out comparing Winston-Salem, then realize they can get more house, more land, or both by looking 20 minutes north. That's where King earns its spot on the list.

A better search usually starts with the town, then the neighborhoods, then the kind of house that makes sense for your budget and actual life. Work backwards from how you want your week to feel, not from one pretty listing.

Buyer FAQ

King NC Home Buyer FAQ

The questions that actually come up — answered without the filler.

Is King a good place to buy a home in the Triad?

King is a strong option for buyers who want a quieter, small-town feel with easy access to Winston-Salem. It's especially practical for buyers who want more house and more land at a similar price point to larger Triad cities.

What is the typical price range for King NC homes for sale?

King has a wide range. Starter homes, established brick ranches, and move-up properties cover most of the market, with some higher-end homes on larger lots outside the city limits. For current pricing in a specific neighborhood, it's easier to ask an agent than trust a generic range online.

What kinds of neighborhoods can buyers find in King?

Established communities like High Meadows and Oakmont, plus larger-lot areas like Mountain View Estates just outside town. You'll also find brick ranches, newer construction pockets, and rural properties on acreage.

What school district are King homes in?

King homes fall under Stokes County Schools. Most King students feed into King Elementary, Chestnut Grove Middle, and West Stokes High. If schools are a deciding factor, narrow neighborhoods by assigned school first and then compare home style.

How long is the commute from King to Winston-Salem?

Roughly 20 minutes via Hwy 52 on a typical day. That direct corridor is a big part of why King works so well as a quieter home base for Winston-Salem commuters.

How should I start searching for King NC homes for sale?

Start with a broad King search to see what's available, then narrow by neighborhood, lot size, and home style. Buyers make better choices when they compare more than one area before locking in on one listing.

Should I compare King with Winston-Salem or Lewisville before buying?

Yes. If you're not fully committed to one area yet, comparing King with nearby Triad markets helps you figure out whether you want more space, a shorter commute, or a different neighborhood setup before you buy.

Can Mantle Realty help me narrow down King neighborhoods?

Yes. We help buyers compare neighborhoods, search smarter, and focus on the parts of King that fit their goals, budget, and actual day-to-day life — instead of chasing whatever listing showed up first.
