One more centerpiece of this renewal is the opening of the new Depot Amphitheater which will bring performances of all types to the heart of Davidson County. The amphitheater is in the heart of uptown Lexington and accommodates national touring acts. Audiences of up to 6,000 people and hosts around 60 events a year.
In addition, Uptown Lexington hosts the annual Barbecue Festival which is the longest running festival of its kind in the US. The barbecue restaurants that Lexington is famous for join forces to serve pork barbecue to up to 200,000 people. Besides the great barbecue, the festival features over 400 vendors selling homemade items and food. There are several stages with live music and a juried art exhibit as well as a car show. One of the most unique aspects is the 50 ton pig-themed sand sculpture which has become an annual event.
The sculpture begins being built a week before the festival and is completed while the festival is going on. In addition to all this there are carnival rides, kids activities and pig races.
